Road Safety Week: Winter Cycling and Legal Guidance for Injured Riders

17 Nov 2025

Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and during the winter months, they face some of the most challenging road conditions of the year. With Road Safety Week taking place from 16th November 2025, organised by road safety charity Brake, it’s a good time to think about staying safe on the roads, especially as the weather turns and the nights are getting darker.

At Berlad Graham, our personal injury team understands the unique risks cyclists face on the roads, not just during the winter months. While we can’t control other road users, we can help you understand your rights if you or a loved one has been injured in a cycling accident that wasn’t your fault.

Dangers For Cyclists

According to Brake, more than 100 cyclists die on the UK roads each year, meaning they make up around 6% of all road deaths. When compared to motorists, statistics show that on average, 30 cyclists die for every billion miles travelled, compared with two car drivers. While there are actually more cycling accidents during spring and summer overall, the casualty rate per mile travelled is significantly higher during autumn and winter months.

Junctions pose one of the biggest risks for cyclists, with collisions often due to motorists not looking properly. Around 45% of all cyclist deaths occur at or near junctions, and more than half of these recorded are at T-junctions. Roundabouts, mini-roundabouts, and crossroads are said to cause just under a third of cyclist deaths. What Should You Do if You Have Been Injured in a Road Traffic Accident?

If you have been involved in a cycling accident with another road user and have sustained injuries as a result, you may be able to make a personal injury compensation claim, even if you were partly at fault. Following an accident, it is important to:

  • Seek medical attention straight away, even if your injuries seem minor.
  • Report the accident to the police, especially if another vehicle was involved.
  • Take photos of the scene, your injuries, and any damage to your bike.
  • Get contact details from any witnesses.
  • Note down the other party’s details, including name, address, telephone number, vehicle registration number, and insurance information if possible.
  • Keep records of any medical appointments and treatments you receive.
  • Keep records of any costs related to your injury, including medical costs, repairs, or replacement of equipment.

How Our Cycling Accident Solicitors Can Help

Our team of solicitors at Berlad Graham LLP have helped cyclists with a wide range of compensation claims, from minor injuries to serious, catastrophic or life-changing injuries, and you can be assured you will be in safe hands. Our personal injury team, headed by Tuyyabah Amjid, has extensive experience representing cyclists who have been injured on the roads. We can help you assess whether you have a valid claim, guiding you through the process step by step.

We take on many compensation claims following an RTA on a no-win no-fee basis, meaning there is no initial financial outlay, and you get fair access to justice following an accident that wasn’t your fault. Most road traffic accident compensation claims are settled out of court, and if your case is successful, you should expect your legal fees to be paid by the other side.

Road Safety Week – Safe Vehicles Save Lives

This year’s Road Safety Week theme is ‘Safe Vehicles Save Lives’, focusing on vehicle safety features and roadworthiness. But safety is a shared responsibility. While we can’t control what other road users do, taking precautions during winter cycling can help reduce your risk of injury.

If you do find yourself injured through no fault of your own, remember that legal support is available. Our team is dedicated to securing proper treatment, appropriate rehabilitation and maximum compensation for cycling accident victims.

We can also help if you need to claim on behalf of a loved one killed or seriously injured in a cycling accident.
